Our Students
Our students range in age from 18 to their 80s. They have come to us from 112 different countries in Europe (including Russia and Ukraine), Asia, South and Central America, the Caribbean, North America, Africa, and the Middle East, with fifty or more countries represented each term. We teach students who live in densely populated neighborhoods, many of whom are low income. The students we help live in Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Lehigh and Northampton Counties in Pennsylvania, and Burlington, Hunterdon, and Mercer counties in New Jersey. We are often helping disadvantaged immigrants and refugees, women with children, and those who are survivors of violence.
Our Teachers
Our teachers, all of whom are unpaid volunteers, live in the same Pennsylvania and New Jersey counties and communities as do our students. Like our students, they range in age from young adults to seniors and possess a wide array of skills, employment and life experiences. The common thread that unites our volunteer teachers is their desire to help local immigrants and refugees thrive and succeed. You do not need teaching experience, ESL certification, or the ability to communicate in any language except English in order to volunteer with us. The only requirement is that you come with an open heart, respect for the diversity of human experience, and a desire to share your knowledge and expertise without judgment.
